Jergens Overnight Repair nightly restoring moisturizer

Rating:  4

I was lucky enough to receive a sample of Jergens Overnight Repair (as well as Jergens Ultra Healing, which I will review separately) lotions from Viewpoints.

In general, I am not a big lotion fan, but with the dry air of the winter months creeping in, I thought I'd try to find a lotion to keep my skin from drying out and cracking like it usually does.  Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the Jergens Overnight Repair lotion, and it will definitely not be what I buy in the coming months.

I found the lotion to be very sticky, and even after sitting for a while to (theoretically) allow the lotion to dry, it didn't.  Instead of being absorbed into the skin to create a lasting moisturizing feeling, the lotion simply rested on top.  I did not feel like this lotion was doing its job of repairing my damaged skin, as advertised.  In my opinion, lotion should not have a noticeable feel after putting it on- it should just do its job.  The fact that this lotion still felt sticky on my legs the morning after I applied it really turns me away from purchasing it.

The Jergens Overnight Repair lotion did have a nice, relaxing floral scent, but that did not make up for the overall negative impression I had with this product.  I would much rather use an unscented lotion with a clean feel than a nicely-scented lotion that is sticky.

UPDATE: Chex Mix party from MyGetTogether

So it's been a few weeks since my Chex Mix party from MyGetTogether, and I'm finally getting around to updating- sorry it took so long!

My roommate, another friend, and I enjoyed our Chex Mix while watching House (which we do every week).  The Chex Mix was a great addition to our weekly get-together.  Normally, we don't have snacks or we are all eating dinner while watching TV.  Because of all the flavors of Chex Mix provided by MyGetTogether, each of us was able to enjoy what we liked.  My friend and I quickly downed the bag of Turtle Chex Mix, while my roommate preferred the Original.  We were also given Honey Nut Chex Mix to sample.

After participating in my first MyGetTogether, I am eager for opportunities to host more parties.  I really enjoyed sharing the food and product information with my friends in a casual, fun environment.  On top of that, we all got to eat really great snacks!

Here's a shout-out to MyGetTogether and General Mills for such a wonderful opportunity!

General Mills & MyGetTogether- Chex Mix party!

First, I want to apologize for not posting as often as I should be.  Now that I'm back at school, I (a) have a lot less free time than I did over the summer, and (b) don't get samples as often.  My mailing address at school is a PO Box, and since most companies won't mail samples to PO Boxes, I have to wait until I go home to get my mail.

Next week, I will be hosting a Chex Mix MyGetTogether, courtesy of General Mills.  For those of you that have heard of HouseParty, this is a similar event.  (However- I haven't yet been selected for a HouseParty; it seems much easier to participate through MyGetTogether.)  I've been sent a "Host Kit" containing materials for my party.  Specifically, I've been given

  • 3 bags of Chex Mix- original, Turtle, and Honey Nut
  • football-themed paper plates and napkins
  • a nice Chex Mix-branded plastic bowl, to fill with snacks
  • coupons to share with my guests
Wow!  All of that, for me to share with my friends.  How generous!  It is obvious to me that General Mills really cares about their brand and their reputation with consumers.

My party will be spread over a few days, as I normally have friends over throughout the week. Since General Mills wants these MyGetTogethers to spread information about their brand, I will be sharing the Chex Mix, etc., with different groups of my friends as they visit me over the course of a few days.

I've put together a mini-blog type thing to chronicle my preparations for this party; it's also where I will post pictures and comments after the big event.  You can find it here.  Please check it out and comment!!

From now on, I'll put forth more effort into maintaining regular posts on this blog.  Stay tuned for updates about my MyGetTogether as well as some new product reviews!

It's been a while...

I wanted to apologize for not posting in a while- I had a crazy end of the summer, and now that I'm back at school, while I will do my best to post often, my schedule is a lot more hectic than it was before.  However, I haven't given up on this blog, so I hope you continue to check back for new posts!

Country Crock Original Butter

Rating: 9

I sampled Country Crock Original Butter as part of the Sam's Club open house this weekend. There were a lot of food samples, so many of my next posts will be reviews of these items.

The butter was served over corn. Unlike some butters that make food too greasy, Country Crock Original Butter imposed a sweet flavor on to the food. I can imagine it tasting great on anything from a bagel to other vegetables.

Since I do a lot of baking, I tend to buy sticks of butter and not tubs. However, if you are looking for a flavorful, sweet tub butter that won't make your food greasy, this is a must buy!

BzzAgent Campaign update - Orbit Gum

Rating (for the Orbit spearmint gum):  9

I was lucky enough to receive my Orbit Gum BzzKit early last week.  How generous- I got 5 packs of gum in 5 different flavors, as well as 6 BOGO coupons to give away to my friends.  BzzAgent relies on word-of-mouth marketing, so the campaigns are designed to facilitate conversations about the product.

I work at a day camp with a bunch of other college students or recent grads, and after lunch is the perfect time for gum.  I was able to share Orbit spearmint gum with my co-workers and give away the BOGO coupons, too.  It seems like Orbit will have some new customers!  I rarely ever chew gum, but even I love the long-lasting, sweet flavor of Orbit gum.  I liked that the gum did not lose its flavor too quickly, so it felt like a worthwhile product compared to some other gums.  The new retro package designs are cool, too- not necessarily a selling point for me, but nice if I was already going to purchase the product.

This BzzAgent campaign has been a really positive experience, and I'm looking forward to participating in more in the future!

You can reach the BzzAgent website by clicking on their button in the sidebar of my blog.  Let me know if you sign up!

EOS Shave Cream

Rating:  6

I was really looking forward to finding a shaving cream that doesn't make a mess all over the shower with crazy amounts of suds.  Unfortunately, EOS Shave Cream was not the one.

I sampled the pomegranate raspberry scent; many other scents are also available.

Instructed by the package to use a thin layer of the cream, I did just that- but found that I needed to use much more than that to make shaving comfortable.  The razor felt like I was dragging it against my skin instead of it sliding smoothly.  I normally just use soap for shaving, and I even found that better than using the EOS Shave Cream.

I did like the scent of the Shave Cream; it was nice to get out of the shower smelling fresh and fruity.  I like that EOS has products in unusual scents because it gives an interesting change to the monotonous routine of showering every day.

Unfortunately, this product did not perform as well as I expected it to; I will stick to my usual shaving cream or soap.

Monster High by Lisi Harrison

I'm a member of HipScouts, a program by Little, Brown and Company publishing that sends out ARC (Advanced Readers Copies) of young adult titles to be read and reviewed.  I'm going to post reviews of some of the books I receive through this program (as well as a similar program from another publisher).  Monster High will be available for purchase this September.  I do my best to keep spoilers out of my reviews!

Rating:  7

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and was excited to pick it up each evening.  I felt that the characters were well-represented and realistic (as "realistic" as monsters can be, anyway).  Even though I'm not in high school anymore, this book transported me back a couple of years and triggered many of the same emotions I felt then.  Lisi Harrison does a great job including just the right amount of information to keep the plot moving while also including important life lessons.  However, I felt that the book ended rather suddenly.  I was hoping that we would find out more of what happened after the dance, and instead, the ending was not satisfying.  It left me with a cliffhanger that I'm not sure needs to be satisfied with another entire book; we really just needed another chapter or two.

Update:  There will be a sequel to Monster High released in Spring 2011.

Houlihan's Salsa Cruda Bruschetta

Rating: 9

Some folks from Houlihan's stopped by the camp I work at this afternoon to drop off food and coupons for the staff. How nice! (Of course, they were soliciting- but who doesn't like free food, especially after an entire day of working outside?!)

The bruschetta is made with perfectly seasoned chopped tomatoes atop an herb cream cheese spread. I tend to find bruschetta too garlicky, but the seasonings on this were not too overpowering, and the tomato flavor was very prominent. The herb cream cheese added a nice, fresh touch and also prevented the bread from getting too soggy. Fresh, soft italian bread completed this wonderful bite. My only complaint would be that the end pieces had a lot less topping than the middle- but, it still tasted delicious! I would be sure to order this the next time I go to Houlihan's.

Coming Soon: my first BzzAgent Campaign!

The wonderful folks at BzzAgent invited me to my first Campaign this week- Orbit Gum!  They'll send me a BzzKit with product samples and coupons.

For those of you who haven't heard of BzzAgent before, it's a Word-of-Mouth marketing site.  Essentially, they send out new or soon-to-be-released products for the Agents to sample.  Agents are supposed to talk about the product to family and friends, and give out coupons so they can try the product too.
Another component to the site is BzzScapes and Frogpond, where Agents review their favorite products and websites, respectively.

I've been a BzzAgent for a few months, and this is my first Campaign.  Agents get asked to specific Campaigns based on the amount of reviews they've posted and their responses to survey questions.

I should receive my BzzKit by the middle of August, and I'll post my review of the entire experience soon after!

Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets

Rating:  9

How convenient!  No detergent to pour, no fabric softener to worry about- Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets make doing laundry so easy!  I just put the sheet in the washer, add my laundry, and then make sure the sheet gets moved to the dryer with the clothes.  Afterwards, the clothes are clean, soft, and smell wonderful, without any hassle.

Though my mom usually does my laundry (I'm at home for the summer), I decided to do mine myself for once to test out this product...and it was definitely worth it.  The Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets made even me not mind doing this chore.  I especially liked the fresh scent left on the clothes; it seemed to take away any odors that are sometimes left behind by other detergents.  In addition, the sheet is easier to find and pull out of the dryer at the end compared to sheets of fabric softener, alleviating the annoying possibility of having it stuck in your clothes.

The only issue I had was that it is recommended that the sheets are placed in the washer before the clothes, and the washer turned on before the clothes are added.  I found that to be difficult to accomplish, because in my tiny laundry room, it's hard to constantly open and shut the washing machine while holding a pile of laundry.  It would be easier to just add the sheet and clothing all at once.

Aside from the price (around $9 per pack of 24), this is a product I would use again.  However, compared to traditional detergents, this is still much more expensive.
You can get more information and a coupon here.

Pure Fitness Crystal Light (Lemon Lime)

Ratings:
Lemon Lime- 10
Strawberry Kiwi- 8
Grape- 7

The wonderful folks over at Vocalpoint sent me samples of each flavor of the new Pure Fitness Crystal Light to try.  I was excited for this sample!  I work at a day camp, so I'm outside all day.  The fact that the new Pure Fitness Crystal Light has added electrolytes for hydration can help me stay at my best for my campers.

I tried all three flavors and decided that my personal favorite was lemon lime.  It tasted just like lemonade- my favorite summertime drink- but contained much less sugar.  In fact, Pure Fitness Crystal Light is sugar-free but is instead sweetened with natural sweeteners- so no aspartame or other artificial sweeteners.  I was glad to discover that I could enjoy my favorite drink and have it do something good for me in return!  Drinking Pure Fitness Crystal Light helps me feel refreshed throughout the day.  When I need something to drink that is more flavorful than water, this is what I pick up.

I found the Strawberry Kiwi and Grape flavors to be too sweet; I enjoyed the tartness of the Lemon Lime.

Thanks to Vocalpoint, I received three $2 off coupons and have been enjoying Pure Fitness Crystal Light in Lemon Lime for a few weeks!  You can buy boxes of Pure Fitness Crystal Light.  They contain 7 packets, each suitable for use with a 16.9 fl oz water bottle.

Burt's Bees Natural Toothpaste

Rating:  8

As a person who tends to HATE mint-flavored toothpaste (personally, i use orange-flavored), I was very happy with the Burt's Bees Natural Toothpaste I received as a sample.  My teeth felt cleaner than usual, and my mouth felt refreshed.

The mint flavor was not overpowering; it was just enough to clean my mouth without leaving a lasting taste.  I liked this, since I don't want to be tasting mint when I am eating my breakfast!  Plus, since the toothpaste is all-natural, I knew that I was using a product safe for me.

The only issue I had (compared to the brand of toothpaste that I normally use) is that the Burt's Bees Natural Toothpaste felt very thick- it was almost hard to spread it onto my teeth.  The physical texture of the toothpaste in my mouth was pleasant, but I had a difficult time at the beginning of brushing getting the toothpaste spread around.

Overall, this is a product that I would definitely consider purchasing in the future; however, I am not prepared to get rid of my current toothpaste and replace it.

You can get a $1 off coupon for Burt's Bees Natural Toothpaste here.

Dunkin' Donuts Strawberry Coolata

Rating:  8

What a perfectly refreshing treat for a hot summer day!  I'm a huge fan of fruity-flavored things, and this drink was delicious!

The strawberry flavor is not too sweet, but sweet enough to still be really yummy.  Unlike a lot of fruit-flavored drinks, the Strawberry Coolata was not sticky-sweet or too sugary, which I was very pleased about.  The flavor is complemented perfectly by the slushee-like consistency of the drink, which cools you off while still tasting great.  I got my Coolata topped with whipped cream (one of my favorite foods =] ), and that just added another level of refreshing flavor.

I got my Coolata as part of my breakfast, and I am happy to say that it successfully took the place of juice (or whatever other cold drink you'd have with that meal).  So, it's perfect any time of day!

The one problem I did have was that as I got to the bottom of the cup, there was a lot more ice and a lot less strawberry flavor than in the rest of the Coolata.

However, I ordered a medium and it was HUGE- so DD is definitely doing their part to make the price worthwhile.  Yum!

Aveeno Nourish+ Revitalize shampoo and conditioner

Rating:  7

The Aveeno Nourish+ Revitalize line made my hair feel soft and manageable even while I was still in the shower.  The shampoo sudsed up well, which is something I always look for in a shampoo.  I noticed right away that my hair felt smoother.  The conditioner continued the same effect, and actually detangled my hair.  Normally, since I have very thick hair, I need to brush it a lot after getting out of the shower, but after using the Aveeno Nourish+ Revitalize conditioner, my hair was easy to manage while still wet.

Unfortunately, my hair was still frizzy when it started to dry.  Even though the Aveeno Nourish+ line did not make any promises to tame frizziness, I was hoping that the moisturizing aspect of the products would help with that, and it didn't.

I straightened my hair after using this shampoo and conditioner, and was pleased that my hair still felt moisturized after applying such high heat to it.

I do wish that there was some sort of hair lotion that was a part of the Nourish+ line to continue the same effects throughout the day.

Overall, the Aveeno Nourish+ Revitalize shampoo and conditioner made my hair soft and manageable; however, I'll still probably stick with my normal hair products.

Bath and Body Works PocketBac - Warm Vanilla Sugar

Rating:  9

The PocketBacs from Bath and Body works are one of my favorite things they sell, so I was glad that they were giving away free samples the last time I went to the mall!  PocketBac is a smaller-sized bottle of Bath and Body Work's antibacterial hand gel.

PocketBac is the perfect size to stick in your purse so when you need to tidy up while you're on the go, it's handy.  You can feel that your hands are cleaner after using the PocketBac, and they smell great to boot.  Because these products are scented, you are not left with the scent of alcohol like you are with some other hand gels.

I've never had a problem with the PocketBac leaking in my purse- a problem I've encountered in the past with other hand gels- which definitely makes me more inclined to purchase more of them in the future.

Warm Vanilla Sugar happens to be my favorite scent, so I was pleased that that was the scent they were sampling.  I don't consider it to be a particularly "summery" scent- it tends to remind me of the winter holidays, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

PocketBac from Bath and Body Works is the perfect antibacterial hand gel for anyone on the go, whether it be kids, students, or parents.

Giveaway! (from Leslie Loves Veggies)

It's about time for me to expand my horizons from just reviewing products to giving them away!  This first giveaway post isn't from me, unfortunately, but the wonderful blog Leslie Loves Veggies is giving away a Baker's Edge Brownie Pan- awesome!

This is perfect for everyone who likes the side brownie pieces (and who doesn't?), because every brownie has a side with this ingenious new pan.  It's nonstick and you can bake your favorite 9x13 recipe in it without changing a thing.  I love to bake, and I can't wait to try this new pan- hopefully I'll get one soon!  Baker's Edge also has a similar pan for lasagna.

Take a look at Leslie's blog and try to get your hands on one!

Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Rating:  1

This sandwich did not live up to my previous experiences with Chick-fil-A sandwiches.  In fact, I ate less than half of my Spicy Chicken Sandwich before throwing it away.

As someone who generally likes spicy foods, I was repulsed by the combination of spices used on this sandwich.  They were too overpowering, making it impossible to eat more than one bite at a time without taking a drink of water in between.  Besides that, the actual flavor of the spices did not taste good, so even when I looked past the overwhelming spiciness of the chicken, I disliked its flavor.

To make the sandwich more appealing to a larger population, Chick-fil-A should have focused on making a flavorful, slightly tangy "spicy" sandwich instead.

For a sandwich that has been so highly advertised, I was expecting much more from the Spicy Chicken Sandwich.  Unfortunately, this is one item I will not be purchasing in the future.

Dunkin' Turbo

[I don't drink coffee, so I had some guests of mine try this sample for me.]

Rating:  7 (6+8)

Taster #1:  It's pretty good...a darker roast than the usual Dunkin' Donuts coffee.
Taster #2:  Good tasting and smooth...a stronger roast than most coffee but not too strong.

Maxwell House Vanilla Caramel Latte

Rating:  1

I was very disappointed to not like this sample, but it fell extremely short of my expectations.  I made the Vanilla Caramel Latte using a little bit less than 8 oz. of warm milk, as directed on the package.  After making the drink, I found the milk to be very overwhelming compared to the proposed flavor of the mix.  I was completely unable to taste the vanilla, and the "caramel" flavor came across as very sweet but unidentifiable as caramel.  I'm not sure if adding less milk would have done anything to alleviate the problem, as the drink was too sweet even as the vanilla flavor disappeared.

I am not the world's biggest coffee drinker, but I normally don't mind drinking it so long as there is another flavor involved- my personal preference for that being vanilla.  Because of this, I was terribly disappointed with Maxwell House Vanilla Caramel Latte.

Sunsilk Hydra TLC line

Rating:  3

I've used the Hydra TLC 24/7 Creme in the past, but this was my first experience using the shampoo or the conditioner.

I have to say, I was less than impressed.  The shampoo lathered up nicely, but that is just about the only good thing I have to say.  The conditioner was very greasy and I had an impossible time trying to rinse it out of my hair.  Even though I spent longer than normal trying to rinse out the conditioner, my hair felt greasy and worse after my shower than before.

I used the 24/7 Creme on its own this time (normally, I use it in addition to mousse and hairspray).  Without the hairspray to harden my hair, I found the gel to be oily, and it formed an uncomfortable residue on my head.  I was forced to pull my hair back into a ponytail because the 24/7 Creme managed to turn my wavy hair into unattractive clumps.  Even brushing out my hair did nothing to alleviate the problem.

I would recommend the 24/7 Creme for use with other hair styling products, but I would steer away from the Hydra TLC Shampoo and Conditioner.

John Frieda Root Awakening line

Rating:  7

For the past 2 years, I have used almost exclusively Herbal Essences shampoos and conditioners, but I am always open to trying new brands.  When I saw that John Frieda samples were available, I jumped at the opportunity since I have sampled John Frieda products in the past and loved what they did for my hair.

Because my hair is naturally very thick and bushy, I was apprehensive about trying Root Awakening, thinking that it would add too much volume to my hair.  Although it did add some volume to my hair, it was controlled and actually gave my normally frizzy hair some nice dimension.  In addition, I don't normally add product to my hair unless I want to leave it down.  However, with John Frieda Root Awakening, I felt comfortable brushing my hair out after I put in the lotion, and my ponytail stayed set and controlled all day!

I was not a fan of the shampoo and conditioner scent, which reminded me of a combination of mint and menthol.  Though I normally use scented shampoos, the mint was too strong and seemed to act only as a scent; it did nothing to refresh my scalp.  Unfortunately, this was a big negative for me, and would be the deciding factor in my choice to purchase the line in the future.  The lotion was not scented (or at least, not as strongly so that I did not notice).  Since that probably did more for my hair than the shampoo or conditioner, I feel safe saying that you can achieve a high level of control and volume using your normal shampoo and conditioner and finishing with a product from John Frieda Root Awakening.

Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion

Rating:  9

This lotion has overcome many downfalls of other body lotions.  It isn't oily or greasy when you put it on.  Instead, it moisturizes your skin and quickly relieves any itchiness caused by dryness.  Its light fragrance adds another dimension of freshness, but is not very overpowering.

As someone who rarely uses body lotions, I was pleased with Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion. My main problem with body lotions in general has been their oiliness when applying them to my skin. I dislike feeling clean and refreshed immediately after getting out of the shower and then feeling greasy again after putting on lotion. The Eucerin lotion dried quickly and left me feeling even more refreshed because of its appealing scent.

In addition, a little bit goes a long way. I was able to use one small sample-sized pouch to adequately apply lotion to both of my legs.

A personal preference of mine is unscented lotion, so that I can use a body mist (or something similar) as a fragrance instead. Other than that, I loved how Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion made my skin feel!

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Extreme Cheese Explosion

Rating:  5

In terms of macaroni and cheese, this is not at the top of my list.  The cheese sauce was flavorful, but it was too intense and made the dish difficult to eat.  Even with the addition of extra milk and butter, the cheese flavor was very overpowering.  After letting the dish cool for a while (so that it was nearly at room temperature), the cheese flavor became milder, but of course most people want to eat macaroni and cheese when it's hot.  Be prepared to be overwhelmed by a very sharp cheese flavor if you eat this macaroni and cheese.

The pasta was neither the traditional elbow nor shell shape.  Instead, it used radiatore pasta, which held onto the cheese sauce better than the traditional shapes would.  I did not mind the pasta shape itself- in fact, I appreciated the novelty of it- but since I was not a fan of the cheese sauce, the extra sauce that stayed with the noodle was not appetizing to me.

Wheat Thins Sun Dried Tomato and Basil

Rating:  8

As someone who's not normally a fan of Wheat Thins, these really hit the mark.

The basil taste was hard to distinguish from the tomato, but the overall flavor was reminiscent of pizza- yum!  The crackers had a nice crisp to them, and every cracker in the package was covered in seasoning.  They were by no means lacking in taste.  A handful of these crackers would be a filling mid-morning snack or a great alternative to chips at your next get-together.  The one problem that I did have was that the flavor tends to get overpowering if you eat too many in a row- so make sure you have a drink handy to refresh your mouth.

Philly Cheesesteak Pretzel

Rating:  7

The Philly Cheesesteak pretzel is exactly what it sounds like- fresh pretzel dough filled with cheesesteak.  Unlike a pretzel dog, where the meat sticks out the end of the pretzel, the Cheesesteak Pretzel is completely enclosed, making it a lot less messy to eat than a regular cheesesteak.

The pretzel dough was fresh and had a nice crispy outside while the inside remained soft.  However, I was looking for it to be saltier, more like an actual pretzel.  Instead, they have designed it to be a secondary player to the cheesesteak and just act as a carrier.

The cheesesteak itself was very moist and flavorful.  It had a slightly peppery flavor, which was a nice touch.  There could have been more cheese inside to make it like a real cheesesteak, but flavor-wise, the cheese was not missed.  I put ketchup on mine, and that definitely complimented the overall flavor.

The Philly Cheesesteak Pretzel is the perfect size for a filling snack; however, it is not suitable to be a full meal like a cheesesteak would be.

On Monday, May 24, you can try a Philly Cheesesteak Pretzel for free at any Philly Pretzel Factory location.

Just getting started...

I'm a fan of free samples (I mean seriously- who doesn't like free things?) and so I've decided to start a blog where I will post reviews of anything free that I get.  Whether it's books, hair products, food, or anything else, I will review it here!  Hopefully this will become a useful venue to find out information about products I've tried so you can try them for yourself!  I will try and post about twice per week, depending on how many things I get in the mail.
